Learn photography by doing photography

I have spent over 35 years of my life doing sports, portrait, and street photography as both a hobbiest and a professional.  In that time I also became a licensed high school teacher and learned the most valuable lesson anyone could learn - I learned how to learn and became my own teacher.  Photographers are visual, experiential learners, which means we learn best by watching and doing.  As I got better at photography I realized the value of connecting with someone who knew how to shoot better than I did; a mentor.  I could watch them work and ask them questions, and once I had an idea of how to do what they did I would go out and experiment.  Once I got the pictures back, I would review them with my mentor where we would discuss ways to get even better.  This iterative process is how most of us learn photography.  But without a mentor, you're working with only half a deck.  Online videos are a great source of information, but nothing is better than shooting what you want to shoot and having a mentor there to help you discuss the precise issues you are working through. 

To help facilitate the learning process Chad Jackson and I created Alchemize.co, an online mentoring tool connecting experts with learners.  We both love photography and the creatives that do it best, and we both shared a goal to help photographers get better at what they love to do.  Today that platform is live.
